“Knowing is the key to caring, and with caring there is hope
that people will be motivated to take positive actions.
They might not care even if they know,
but they can’t care if they are unaware.”
– Sylvia Earle
I was talking with someone last week about how ocean issues are perceived by those who don’t live on the coast. The idea that what happens to the ocean matters to those who live in a landlocked environment is not readily seen, and it can be hard to articulate sometimes.
Then I remember to mention that half of all the oxygen we breathe has its origens in the sea, regardless of whether we live on the beach or high in the Rockies. At least half. As it turns out, breathing is something that we have all gotten used to and the option of getting by on half rations of oxygen is not an option at all. No matter where you live.
