The Numbers

Survey Complete

There were a few times during the day when I thought it might be possible to turn a trash bag sideways and just let the wind blow all the debris right in. It did not actually work that way, however, and even though the wind was strong all day, the sun was out and the 3rd Annual Tacoma Shoreline Survey turned out to be a great success. It will take a few days to compile all the data but for now, here are a few raw numbers:

187 volunteers
722 pounds of debris collected
47 foot-long plastic pipe
>1000 cigarette butts

Thanks to the sponsors who brought smiles to a lot of faces with gift boxes from Lush, coffee from Valhalla, tumblers, straws and insulated bottles from Klean Kanteen, and shirts, hats and more from Werner Paddles. A big shout out to Metro Parks and City of Tacoma staff for their help, and to the other organizations who partnered with the Ikkatsu Project to actually get it done: South Sound Surfrider, Citizens for a Healthy Bay and Tacoma Ocean Fest.
