I had the opportunity to go and speak to the 7th grade class at Annie Wright today. These are the same kids I worked with last year on beach surveys in the Straits and it was good to see them again. They are all another year older and yet, I haven’t aged a bit.

I was able to bring the Hyas yiem, and the kids were all pretty interested in that. They are currently designing their own boats out of a mix of milk cartons and plastic bottles, so they were all giving the kayak the boatbuilder’s eye, measuring this and prodding that. One of my favorite things about this project (and the others), is that I get to share it with kids who are genuinely aware of the environmental issues that their world faces, and they have a desire to do something about it. It gives me some hope for the future.
