Update: It seems that some of what we were thinking when we held onto that fishing float is correct. It is from Japan and it does appear to be from a small operation located in one of the towns hardest-hit by the tsunami. Whether it is tsunami debris and whether it can be linked to an owner that is still there are a couple of the items that remain to be seen. But we’re working on it.

What we do know is that the float has a partial address of “21Hama, Motoyoshi-cho Kesenn-numa City, Miyagi Pref.” There are two names there as well, “Saito Nobuko” is a woman’s name and “Tadashi” is the first name of a man. So far, that’s what we have to go on.

Nicolina Lanni and John Choi, two Canadian film-makers who are working on a documentary about tsunami debris and how specific items are being returned to the people who lost them, are in Japan right now. They are filming a segment of the story that has taken them to the area near where this float originated. They have the information and they’ll be doing some follow-up in the next week or so. It will be interesting (to say the least), to see what they turn up.
