Spooling Up

“If you wait until the last minute, it only takes a minute.”

While that procrastinating sentiment has seen me through more moments than I care to admit – college assignments, car maintenance issues, etc. – it’s not actually a very tranquil way of getting through life. And, so much falls through the cracks and is never seen again that I have begun to question the wisdom of this teenager axiom. Finally, there are some things (maybe even most), where this policy fails miserably.

Long kayak trips require an incredible amount of preparation. You can’t just phone it in during the period leading up to them and then expect to jump in and have a successful expedition. The preparation is key, and the more demanding the journey, the more preparation is required.

This is what is going through my head right now, looking ahead to an idea that is still a ways off, knowing that I need to get started, that the mental and physical sides of the project need to be strengthened, if this is to succeed.
